Privacy Policy

BETR OFF is operated by BETR APPS INC (“BETR OFF,” “we,” “us,” or “our”). This policy explains what data we collect through the BETR OFF mobile app and website (the “Service”), how we use it, who we share it with, and the choices and rights you have. BETR OFF exists for one reason — to help you stop gambling — and we collect data for that purpose, not to advertise to you or sell you out.

1. The short version

  • We collect what you give us (account and recovery data) and basic technical data needed to run the app.
  • We use it to provide and personalize the Service, keep you safe, and — only in anonymized, aggregated form — to learn what helps people recover.
  • We do not sell your data, and we never share your recovery data with advertisers. Our marketing website — not the app — runs advertising-measurement tools that report site visits to those providers.
  • You can export all of your data and delete your account yourself, from inside the app, at any time.

2. Data we collect

Account and authentication data. When you create an account, we collect an identifier from your chosen sign-in method — Apple Sign-In, Google Sign-In, or an anonymous identity you can later link to a sign-in. Depending on the method this may include an email address or an opaque identifier. We do not receive your Apple or Google password.

Recovery and behavioral data. This is the heart of the product. It includes the data you create as you use the app, such as: onboarding answers, daily check-ins, mood and emotional-state reports, urge events (timing, intensity, triggers), Kill Switch / urge-interruption activity, streak and milestone data, savings amounts and goals, “Worth It” items and reminders, and your feature engagement and session activity.

Community content. If you post in the community, we collect the content you submit (messages, comments, images) and related data such as reactions, reports, and blocks.

AI coach conversations. When you use the AI coach, we collect the messages you send and the coach’s responses so the coach can function and improve your experience. These conversations are processed by a third-party AI provider on our behalf (see “Who we share data with”).

Device and analytics data. We collect technical data needed to operate and improve the app, such as device type and operating-system version, app version, language/region, crash reports, push-notification tokens, and in-app event logs (which features you use and when). These events are timestamped so we can understand patterns and improve interventions.

Subscription status. We receive your subscription state (active, trial, lapsed, plan, renewal status) from Apple and our subscription tooling so we can unlock features and understand churn. Payment card details are handled by Apple — we never see or store them.

Website data. If you submit your email through the website (waitlist or contact form), we store that email to reach you. The website also runs analytics and advertising-measurement tools — including the Meta (Facebook) pixel — which set cookies in your browser and report your activity on this site to those providers so we can measure how our advertising performs. This applies to the marketing website only; the BETR OFF app does not contain advertising trackers. You can limit this with your browser’s cookie controls, a tracking blocker, or your Meta ad preferences.

3. How we use your data

  • To provide the Service — run your account, track your streak and progress, deliver check-ins, the AI coach, the community, and push notifications.
  • To personalize — tailor content, prompts, and interventions to your recovery.
  • For safety and crisis awareness — detect signals of distress or objectionable content so we can respond appropriately, including surfacing crisis resources.
  • To improve the Service — using anonymized, aggregated patterns from the dataset to understand what interventions actually break urges and to make the product better, consistent with our data principles. Anonymized means the data cannot be used to identify you.
  • To communicate — send you essential service messages and occasional product updates about BETR OFF. We do not use your data to market unrelated products.
  • To meet legal and security obligations — prevent abuse, enforce our Terms of Use, and comply with the law.

Where the GDPR or UK GDPR applies, we rely on these legal bases:

  • Contract — to provide the Service you signed up for.
  • Consent — for optional things such as certain notifications or sensitive data you choose to share; you can withdraw consent at any time.
  • Legitimate interests — to secure, maintain, and improve the Service and to conduct anonymized aggregate research, balanced against your rights.
  • Legal obligation — where the law requires us to retain or disclose data.

Some recovery data may be considered sensitive (special-category) data. We process it to provide the Service you have requested and, where required, on the basis of your explicit consent. All data used for aggregate analysis is anonymized, and we do not sell identifiable individual data.

5. Who we share data with

We do not sell your personal data, and we do not share your app or recovery data in identifiable form with advertisers — the one exception is the marketing website’s advertising-measurement tools, described in the last bullet below. Otherwise we share data only with service providers (“processors”) who help us run the Service, under contracts that require them to protect it and use it only on our instructions:

  • Cloud, database, and authentication hosting — our backend runs on Supabase (PostgreSQL, authentication, storage, and serverless functions), hosted in the United States (the us-west-2 region).
  • Apple — app distribution, Apple Sign-In, in-app purchases, billing, and subscription status.
  • Google — Google Sign-In for users who choose it.
  • AI provider for the coach — coach conversations are processed by a third-party large-language-model provider (the coach is built on the Claude/Anthropic API) to generate responses. The provider processes this content on our behalf and does not use it to train its models for its own purposes.
  • Push notifications — delivery of notifications via the platform push services (including Firebase Cloud Messaging and Apple Push Notification service).
  • Analytics and crash reporting — to understand usage and fix problems.
  • Advertising measurement (website only) — our marketing website runs the Meta (Facebook) pixel, which reports page views and conversion actions (such as clicking through to the App Store or submitting a form) to Meta so we can measure how our advertising performs. Meta may use this data as an independent controller under its own terms. This runs on the website only — it is not in the BETR OFF app, and it never receives your recovery data.

We may also disclose data if required by law, to enforce our Terms, or to protect the rights, safety, and security of our users, the public, or BETR OFF — and in connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, with notice where required.

6. Your data rights and how to use them

You control your data, and the most important controls are built right into the app:

  • Export your data (self-serve). The app provides an “Export my data” feature that produces a complete JSON archive of your account and recovery data, which you can download and keep. You do not need to email us to get it.
  • Delete your account and data (self-serve). From Profile → Delete account, you can permanently delete your account and all associated data yourself. Deletion is immediate and irreversible: after it completes, your records across all user-scoped data — streaks and progress, check-ins and mood history, urge events, coach conversations, savings and goals, community posts and comments, “Worth It” items, and related data — are removed (or irreversibly anonymized) from our servers, except for a minimal, non-identifying audit record we keep for compliance and abuse-prevention. Note that deleting your account does not cancel an active subscription; cancel that through Apple.

Depending on where you live, you also have the right to access, correct (rectify), delete (erase), and port your personal data, to object to or restrict certain processing, and to withdraw consent. You can exercise most of these rights directly in the app (export and deletion above). For anything else — such as correcting specific data or a question about your rights — email support@betroff.com and we will respond within the time required by applicable law. We will not discriminate against you for exercising your rights, and you have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data-protection authority.

7. Data retention

We keep your personal data for as long as your account is active and as needed to provide the Service. When you delete your account, we remove or irreversibly anonymize your data promptly, except: (a) a minimal, non-PII audit record (an opaque user reference, timestamp, deletion reason, and subscription state) retained for compliance and abuse-monitoring; and (b) anonymized, aggregated data that can no longer identify you, which we may retain for research and product improvement. We may also retain limited data where the law requires it.

8. Security

We protect your data with technical and organizational measures, including encryption in transit, access controls, authentication scoped so that you can only reach your own data, server-side enforcement of those access rules, and least-privilege handling of administrative access. No system is perfectly secure, but we design the Service to be privacy-protective by default and we work to keep it that way.

9. Children’s privacy

The Service is intended for adults (18 or older) and is not directed to children. We do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 18. If we learn that we have collected data from someone under 18, we will delete it.

10. International data transfers

We are based in the United States and our infrastructure is hosted in the United States. If you use the Service from outside the US, your data will be transferred to and processed in the US and other countries that may have different data-protection laws than yours. Where required, we rely on appropriate safeguards (such as the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses) for these transfers.

11. US state privacy rights (CCPA/CPRA and similar)

If you are a California resident, the CCPA/CPRA gives you the right to know what personal information we collect and how we use and disclose it, to access and delete it, to correct it, and to opt out of its “sale” or “sharing.” We do not sell your personal information. Our marketing website’s advertising-measurement tools (see “Who we share data with”) may qualify as “sharing” for cross-context behavioral advertising as California defines it; you can opt out using your browser’s cookie controls, a tracking blocker, or a Global Privacy Control signal, or by emailing us. We do not share your app or recovery data, and we do not use sensitive personal information for purposes beyond providing the Service. You will not be discriminated against for exercising your rights. Residents of other US states with similar laws (such as Virginia, Colorado, Connecticut, and Utah) have comparable rights. To exercise any of these rights, use the in-app export and deletion tools or email support@betroff.com.

12. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will update the “Last updated” date and flag the change in the app or on this page. Your continued use of the Service after changes take effect means you accept the updated policy.

13. Contact

Questions about your privacy or this policy? Email us at support@betroff.com, or see the contact page. In the app, go to Profile → Support.
